Luc Childéric Review – English Saddles

Even though Luc Childéric is in the saddles business for 30 years, this French brand name is somewhat less common in North America than some of his French competitors. That does not mean its horse tack has a lower quality. In fact, the 7 jumping and 2 dressage Childéric models all deserve the highest ratings.

"Luc Childéric Review"

Saddles Rating

4.9/5

Top Luc Childéric Qualities

Deep seat without being restrictive, outside thigh blocks to keep the perfect position, amazing fitting on a large variety of horses, very high quality, extremely hard wearing leather, monoflap gives close contact, really light in weight, needs little breaking in

Dislikes about Luc Childéric Saddles

Expensive

Price Range of a Luc Childéric When New

$2,500-4,500

Summary of Luc Childéric Saddles

Finally a brand name that really compares to Devoucoux and Delgrange! I realized I picked up three French brand names while I know a lot of other European countries are very good at making English saddles. The thing is I based my choices upon a non-scientific survey made on all the riders I know. My survey did not mention any names, I left it wide open and then pick up the ones with the more mentions. Well, Luc Childéric well deserved being on the list! Owners of such a saddle are amazed by its quality, its beautifulness, its comfort and the fact it fits almost any horse. Apparently, trailing in this high standard saddle feels like walking in an old pair of shoes. No wonder why they are hard to find: owners keep it forever!

Simco Review – Western Saddles

Since 1990, Simco merged with Longhorn and is now known as Simco-Longhorn. That transaction did not change much to the Simco manufacture as both manufactures stayed at the same places (Chattanooga, TN for Simco). This review is for Simco saddles only. With its 20 craftsmen, Simco has developed over 75 models since 1933, including some for youth. All of them are handmade.

"Simco review", "Simco Saddles"

Saddles Rating

3.5/5

Top Simco Qualities

Soft and smooth leather, light weight, can be used for many purposes, good buy for the money, very comfortable

Dislikes about Simco Saddles

Stitching came loose on the seat, “new” styles not as good looking, hard to fit narrow horse, disappointment in some models

Price Range of a Simco When New

$600-1,000

Summary of Simco Saddles

It looks like the quality of Simco Saddles went down in the last years. Many owners of old models were disappointed by their new Simco. To them, quality was not as good as before and styling was missing, making their new saddles look cheap. For those who never had one before, it seems like they’re happy with their saddle because it is a “good buy for the money”.  I think that Simco saddles are good for beginners who wish to ride in a saddle of their own or people who would like to have an “okay” saddle, nothing more. As for the older models, reviews are all good. Another reason to buy second hand! ;-)

American Saddlery Review – Western Saddles

Although I was not able to find the foundation date of The American Saddlery (once The American), it seems that this company exists for a very long time. Its manufacture is based in Tennessee and 95% of its saddles are handmade. Many models are classified as entry-level ones, but American Saddlery also makes a couple of high-end series. The company recently bought Big Horn Saddles, another well-known brand name in Western Saddles.

Saddles Rating

4/5

Top American Saddlery Qualities

Beautiful, very comfortable, attractive tooling, very secure, well-balanced, easy fitting on horses and riders, durable

Dislikes about American Saddlery Saddles

Stirrups leather easily damaged, many models offer only in 16 inches size

Price range of an American Saddlery when new

$400-1,700

Summary of American Saddlery Saddles

It might seem strange that American Saddlery gets a rating as good as Circle Y, because their saddles are not necessarily is the same quality range. This is explained by the fact that most American Saddlery owners were impressed by their saddle for the price they paid. We often hear “you get what you pay for”, well it seems that with American Saddlery it would be more accurate to say “you get more than what you pay for”. Maybe American Saddlery Saddles manage to get this high satisfaction level because of the fact that most of them are handmade. Nonetheless, I would say it is a good “first” saddle to start riding or to learn a new discipline.

Bruno Delgrange Review – English Saddles

As a French rider who competed with the best, Bruno Delgrange is a well-known saddler to high-level competitors. And it is those riders who help Delgrange with its saddles evaluations. Mostly known for its high-quality jumping saddles, Delgrange has 5 principle models for competition, jumping, dressage and all-purpose riding, all available with custom made options.

"bruno delgrange saddles", "bruno delgrande review", "saddles review"

Saddles Rating

4.7/5

Top Bruno Delgrange Qualities

Very well-constructed, supple and soft leather, deep secure seat, effortless balance, knees and rear blocks offer perfect position of the legs

Dislikes about Bruno Delgrange Saddles

Expensive, soft leather can scratch, some riders like less padding and blocks

Price Range of a Bruno Delgrange When New

$3,000-4,100

Summary of Bruno Delgrange Saddles

I personally tried a Delgrange and really loved it. The only reason why I did not buy it is that I did not have that much money to put in a saddle at the moment. Still, for some reasons I can’t explain, the reviews and comments I got were not as perfect as the ones for Devoucoux. There are riders who don’t like the feeling of the Delgrange blocks and feel they have more freedom without them.  It was totally the opposite for me as they helped me finding the perfect position. Maybe it is also because Bruno Delgrange holds fewer models than Devoucoux. Nevertheless, I would recommend those saddles anytime if you like a horse tack that makes you feel secure and thinks about position for you.

Circle Y Review – Western Saddles

Circle Y, originally a family enterprise, operates for more than 50 years in the small Yoakum town, Texas. Its high-quality reputation made it easy for Circle Y to sponsor a lot of World Champions in Western field who proudly use this brand name.

"Circle Y Saddles", "western saddles reviews", "Circle Y saddles review"

Saddles Rating

4/5

Top Circle Y Qualities

Forward stirrups (especially for barrel saddles), high-tech tree, classy looking and gorgeous, comfortable, great grip, mostly light, excellent tooling, perfect stitches

Dislikes about Circle Y Saddles

Only lasts about 4 years for some models, changes in color, nylon billets break easily, suede seat wearing off

Price range of a Circle Y when new

$800-2,000

Summary of Circle Y Saddles

Although Billy Cook and Circle Y are in the same price range, I got more positive comments for Circle Y. It seems that the second managed to maintain high-quality control over the years, while the other experienced some quality problems in owners’ view. Nevertheless, the comments varied from a model to another for Circle Y as well and I recommend you choose your model carefully, based on its own reviews. A lot of riders used Circle Y saddles to show up as they are beautiful enough (and comfortable) for this task. This means to me that those saddles are really worth it, considering they are quite affordable.

Devoucoux Review – English Saddles

The founder, Jean-Michel Devoucoux, is a craftsman born in France who started his own company in 1985. Only a couple of years later, his saddles were known worldwide. Devoucoux includes 13 different models declined in a number of colours and sizes, all hand-made. Devoucoux also makes saddles for almost every English riding style. Although those products are sometimes hard to find in North America, everyone agrees that Devoucoux is synonym of the highest quality.

"devoucoux saddles", "devoucoux reviews"

Saddles Rating

4.9/5

Top Devoucoux Qualities

Very comfortable, very secure, great quality, perfect stitching, fits a wide variety of horse, lasts a lifetime, excellent customer service

Dislikes about Devoucoux Saddles

Scratches easily (but disappear with oil), long wait (when new, it is custom made and hand made for you), expensive

Price range of a Devoucoux when new

$2,500-4,500 depending on models

Summary about Devoucoux Saddles

I tried to find a negative rating either among my friends or over the Internet, but there isn’t any. It seems that trying it is buying it! Even the persons who bought a used Devoucoux are 100% satisfied. The statement following the term “expensive” was always “well worth every penny though”.  And having a Devoucoux’ representative to come visit you, explain the saddle and find the perfect fit immediately made the person feel confident and worth the long wait. The only reason why I did not put a perfect rating is because I always believe perfectness is almost impossible to achieve. Once again, I am sure Devoucoux’ owners would argue with me on that! So the conclusion is simple, if you find a second hand saddle of this brand that fits you and your horse, simply buy it!

Billy Cook Review – Western Saddles

Billy Cook saddles are among the most well-known in Western Equestrian world. For some reason though, it is hard to find info about its history. It seems Billy Cook is there for ever, as there once was another saddles brand name called Cook. Imitations are numerous too, but the real Billy Cook saddles are made from true genuine only and come from Oklahoma, USA."billy cook saddles", "western saddles", "horse tack"

Saddles Rating

3.5/5

Top Billy Cook Qualities

Good looking, nice stitching, great tooling, wide tree, stirrups hung forward, pre-turned stirrups

Dislikes about Billy Cook Saddles

Hard seat, low-quality silver, sored many horses, poor fitting on horse (even with custom made order)

Price range of a Billy Cook when new

$800-2,000

Summary of Billy Cook Saddles

The commentaries were variable from a model to another. The owners rather love their Billy Cook or really don’t like it. I guess part of the explanation is that it is a good quality-price ratio, but not more than that. So there are people who might expect too much from it because of the name. Another issue that was brought up often is the quality difference between the Oklahoma saddlery and the one in Texas. Apparently, customers from Texas are more deceived than the ones in Oklahoma. I hesitated a long time before giving the rating because I think the poor fitting issue on horses mentioned a couple of times is a serious problem for a saddle. But I must admit there were a lot of good comments about fitting also. Who is right? Hard to know. This is why my recommendation would definitely be to try it on your horse before buying.

Stubben Review – English Saddles

Stubben is a very well-known brand name for English Saddles, originally founded by a European family in 1894. They make models for dressage, jumping and close contact as well as all-purpose. All the opinions I collected around me were positives and so were most of the ones read over the Internet. Of course, the ratings and comments can change from a model to another, but my review is based upon general evaluation of the brand.stubben saddles, saddles reviews, horse tack

Saddles Rating

4.5/5

Top Stubben Qualities

Comfortable, well-balanced, soft and supple leather, beautiful, secure deep seat, well-constructed

Dislikes about Stubben Saddles

Took a while to break in, sometimes billets are too short, tree narrower than other standard brands

Price range of a Stubben when new

$1500-3000 depending on models

Summary about Stubben Saddles

Users tend to like them most for dressage and all-purpose although some models are among the best ones available for jumping and close-contact. A second hand one can surely be bought around $700-1800 depending on age, condition and models. Stubben is almost always a good choice, but your personal feeling as well as fitting on your horse has to be taken into consideration before buying. Just like with any other brands, there can be deceptions when the saddle is bought only for the name.

How to Protect and Clean Your Second Hand Saddle

One can find a lot of cleaning products for saddles and other leather equipment. I am not going to go into a list of my favourite products, but there are simple rules to follow in order to keep your tack in good shape.

"how to clean a saddle", "saddle cleaning", "saddle protection", "how to protect your saddle"

How to Clean Second Hand Saddle?

No matter what are the benefits of the one-step cleaning products, glycerine is still one of the best choices to clean leather, whether it is on a bar, spray or oil type. So here is step one:

1.       Clean your saddle with a damp sponge or cloth and glycerine. Do not forget any space, outside and inside out! After cleaning, gently rinse with a damp sponge or cloth. Do not put water directly on leather or to not wet your cloth too much.

Next step is about conditioning the leather so it stays smooth and flexible. Often done with neatsfoot oil, this step does not need to be done each time. Once or twice a year should be enough. Also make sure to not overuse it to avoid weaken up leather.

2.       Gently apply a little amount of pure neatsfoot oil with a clean cloth. Leather must not be dry but slightly damp. Remove excess with a soft dry cloth.

I have to mention that I personally don’t like using oil on my saddle. I know this is what most recommends, but I find it leaves a sticky coat, even when I do not put much on it. I prefer using a conditioner that will protect my saddle without being hard to deal with.

3.       Use a conditioner for more protection. Generally comes in a cream, apply conditioner with a clean soft cloth and rub thoroughly. Then, allow it to dry and finish up by buffing it with a gentle cloth.

If you have a synthetic saddle, like a Wintec for example, you are better to use a synthetic cleaner and conditioner. These are available in almost all tack shops.

When Do I Clean my Second Hand Saddle?

You can do step number one every week if you ride every day or every month if you ride only once a week.  As mentioned, the oil must be used only once or twice a year as the conditioner can be used every season (3-4 times a year).

I find the one-step cleaning products to be very useful on a “daily” basis. Of course, they do not protect as well as a real conditioner. But it avoids doing all the steps every time. Once in a while, I do a full cleaning and protecting work on my saddle.

Other Saddle Protection Tips

  • Leather does not like sun that much. Keep your saddle in a dark place, preferably with a saddle cover on it.
  • If you have to put your saddle on the ground, always put it on his pommel, it will be more stable and prevent it from being broken.
  • Cold can be another leather enemy. If you use your saddle during cold days, make sure you use a conditioner that prevents rain and cold damages. Don’t leave your saddle wet without wiping it.
  • When you clean your saddle, take a look at the stitches and make sure they are in good condition. If you notice any sewing dysfunction, get it fixed. Some stitches are decorative; others really keep the shape of your saddle.

Second Hand Saddles Vs New: The Pros and Cons

"new horse saddle", "second hand saddle", "used saddle"

The choice of this website name is not pure hazard. As I mentioned in my first article, this website was inspired by own experience in finding a second hand saddle. My decision to choose used rather than new was based on a pros and cons list that I decided to share with you. I did a summary chart but don’t stop reading there as I explain each of my points below.

New SaddleSecond Hand Saddle
ProsConsProsCons

More control over qualityTry outs less commonBetter quality-price ratioSeller may be far

New Saddles Pros

More choices available

Of course, if you buy new, chances are you will have plenty of choices for colours, sizes, materials, brand names and the accessories needed with it such as the stirrups. Still, saddle shops are bigger and more common in some areas than others.

More control of quality

Since it is new, you don’t have to care much about how it was maintained. So the control of maintaining it in good condition is yours.

Custom made possibilities

In some saddles shops, there are some possibilities to make command on demand. You can therefore ask for a wider width or longest skirt for example. This is even truer if you buy from a manufacturer. This option is very interesting for people who have a horse with rare dimensions or are themselves not a “standard” size rider. Particular padding needs can also be fulfilled with this option.

Newest models available

You might have noticed I put this sentence in both pros and cons. Well, this is because it is nice to have the latest model out there but it can also results in a higher cost. Also, as in cars, sometimes the older models were very good and have made their quality proof. Not every saddles shop keeps both newest and older models in store.

Warranties

I am not a fan of warranties but it can secure a buyer…

New Saddles Cons

More expensive

Well, do I really need to explain that one? New saddles are very expensive and accessories like stirrups are often not included. I think it is nonsense to buy a new cheap vinyl saddle at a cost around $500-700 when you can find good leather used one for $800-1000 or even at the same price, depending on models.

Try outs less common

I personally don’t know any store that allows you to borrow a new saddle to try it out on your horse and ride with it. The thing is, even though they can make you sit in it and take your measurements, your saddle needs to fit on your horse as well. And the feeling is really not the same when you ride in a saddle than just try to sit in there as if it were on a horse.

Not supple leather

Leather takes some time to be flexible. When new, it can be uncomfortable for a while. I don’t like vinyl saddle that much as I found it more slippery and those saddles have a tendency to split more than leather ones.

Chances of compulsive expenses

Buying second hand makes you think more about the right choice for you. You might have a good intention to go to a store and just “have a look” to realise you ended up buying a saddle more expensive than expected with new stirrups, new girth or cinch, new saddle pads and why not this new bridle while being at it? Okay, I might be exaggerating (although not that much if you shop like my stepmother!) but the point is you might end up spending more than your needs.

Second Hand Saddles Pros

Less expensive and better quality-price ratio

I don’t think I have to explain why it is less expensive and why I prefer paying less. But I say good quality matters over new materials. And buying second hand helps finding a good quality saddle at a good price. Leather is a very resistant material. It goes through years without trouble if cared for properly. Just make sure the saddle you are aiming to buy is in good condition.

Often come with accessories

Quite a few sellers are selling because they do not ride anymore or because their new horse or discipline needs very different equipment. If it is the case, chances are they will include stirrups, girth or cinch, or even saddle pads in their price. This can be very useful and quite cheap.

More comfortable

When the saddle has been ridden in for a few years, its leather is supple, already shaped and more comfortable.

Trustful seller

When I decided to buy a saddle, I spread the word along to two coaches I know. I still was searching over the net, but I told a lot of persons I was riding with. After a couple of months, my coach told me one of her former student had a good one to sale. Well, it was the perfect fit. As I have confidence in my coach, I knew she was not trying to mislead me and she did not get any benefit from it. So the seller can be a friend of a friend or a relative you trust.

Easy to try it out

Most sellers are fine with lending you the saddle for an hour or two for you to try it out. A large number of sellers are whiling to meet you at your stable to give you a chance to do so. You can then verify it fits both you and your horse and actually have a better feeling of it when riding with it.

Shop at the comfort of your home

This is truer if you shop online. But the point is, you often don’t have to travel different stores and spend gas to find a saddle. Online reviews and pictures can answer most of your questions.

Second Hand Saddles Cons

Takes more patience to shop

Because not every size and model are on sale near you, it takes more patience to shop for the perfect second hand saddle than a new one. But it gives you time to really think about the best purchase for you.

Seller might be far away

If you buy from another state, province or even a different country, there might be delivery fees and trying it out is fairly impossible. It is also a lot more complicated to get in touch with the person if any problem occurs.

Chances of repairs being done

Second hand saddles do sometimes need some repairs. If it does, negotiate with the seller to make him or her pay for it or lower the price so you can fix it on your own.

Hard to find reviews on older models

It can be hard to find reviews or commentaries on models that do not exist anymore. So it can be difficult for you to evaluate fairly the product that is offered. Forums on horse’s topics can be useful for that. Asking riders themselves is often the best reference, although comfort is different from a person to another.
